Michael Putsch was born in Philadelphia and studied voice at the Oberlin Conservatory, the renowned Manhattan School of Music in New York and in Vienna. He has studied with teachers of the calibre of Richard Barrett, John Alexander (Metropolitan Opera), William Johns (Mannheim) and Walter Moore (Vienna).
Michael was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Competition and in 1992 was awarded a prize at the International Belvedere Competition in Vienna.
Michael Putsch made his professional debut at the New York City Opera, where he sang the role of Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Barbiere di siviglia. In 1993, as prize winner of the Belvedere Competition he was engaged to sing at the Wiener Kammeroper.
Other engagements took Michael to the Stadttheater Bremerhaven where he was in the ensemble from 1991-1996 and sang with great success the roles of Rodolfo in La Boheme, Jim Mahoney in Mahagonny, and the title role of Werther amongst others. Guest engagements followed, including the Komische Oper Berlin as Arturo in Lucia. In 1996 Michael was engaged by the Staatstheater Schwerin where he sang until 2000, and among his roles were his first Don Ottavio and Faust.
Since his engagement at the Theater Heidelberg in 2001 Michael has carefully developed his voice into a spinto tenor, and he has sung in Heidelberg the roles of Cavaradossi in Tosca, Max in Der Freischütz and the title role in Tannhäuser to critical acclaim. Roles in Heidelberg also include Alfredo in La Traviata, the Prince in Rusalka, and Hermann in Pique Dame.
Before singing Lortzings Undine as Hugo v. Ringstetten in the Theater Bremerhaven he joines the Royal London Philharmonic Orchestra on their tour through Germany.
Among his recent engagements : Bacchus (Ariadne/Strauss) at Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg .
He also appeared at the Innsbruck, Palermo, Regensburg, Nürnberg operahouses.
